Hornbill Beak Traders were Arrested in North Sumatra

Forest rangers from the Gunung Leuser National Park supported by the Wildlife Crimes Unit arrested hornbill beak traders in Langkat, North Sumatra. The traders were arrested on June 14 when they tried to sell 12 helmeted hornbill beaks to a buyer. The authority also confiscated two rifle guns used to poach the protected hornbills and two cellphones. The traders have been poaching hornbills since 12 years ago, and have sold 24 hornbill beaks to a dealer and one middleman last month.
Since six month ago, the number of beaks sold is 124.

The price of hornbill beaks increased sharply in Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau since three years ago. The price has also started to raise in Lampung, Bengkulu, and West Sumatra. All beaks are exported for Traditional China Medicine (TCM).
